Session Leaders: Betsy Ross, President and Founder - Game Day Communications, has more than 30 years experience as a sports and news anchor. One of the first women to break into national sports news, Betsy worked as an anchor at ESPN for five years. Before anchoring SportsCenter and ESPN News, Betsy worked at NBC News Channel and Cincinnati?s NBC affiliate, WLWT-TV, for seven years, where she covered the 1996 presidential election and inauguration and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. She continues to be involved in sports broadcasting as the voice of Paul Brown Stadium, play-by-play anchor for ESPN, Conference USA and Atlantic-10 women?s basketball and as a sports reporter for Cincinnati?s FOX 19 and Bengals Weekly.
Stephanie Mileham, Events Marketing Manager, brings more than eight years of marketing, promotions, special event planning, sales and community relations experience to Game Day Communications. Prior to joining Game Day, Stephanie worked with the University of Cincinnati Athletic Department, the Cincinnati Bengals and Clear Channel Radio. She is a graduate of Ohio University. |

Session Leaders: Pete Reigel has measured 368 US courses between 1982 to March 7,
2008 and he has measured 38 foreign courses. He has taught 23 seminars on the topic and certified 1833 US
courses. He has written a book on
measurement and has co-written five books on the topic. He was the editor of Measurement News
from 1982-2002 and served as the Chairman of the Road Running Technical
Council, USATF from1986-2000. He
was the IAAF/AIMS International Measurement Administrator, Americas from
1993-2002.
Mike Wickiser has Measured 143 courses between 1986 to current. He has conducted seminars and workshops
in Albany (2), Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Spokane, Akron, Curacao, Indiana and
Washington He is the Road Race Technical Council Workshop/Training
administrator. He is an IAAF/AIMS
International Measurement Class “A” measurer. Mike has been the Chairman, Road Running Technical Council,
USATF, the Vice Chairman East RRTC, USATF, Validations Chairman RRTC, USATF, Course
Registrar RRTC, USATF and Race Services Coordinator Summit Athletic Club.

Working with Local Government and Community Leaders One of the greatest threats facing road racing today is the trend of local governments creating road blocks for the development or continuation of events through denial of permits, excessive insurance coverage demands, and more. Attend this session to learn important tips on how you can work effectively with your local governments (cities, counties, school districts, police, etc.) and community leaders to ensure positive and supportive community relations. Engage in discussions how the RRCA can collectively work together to ensure national support of local road racing events.
Session Leader: David M. Patt, CAE, Executive Director, Association of Running Event Directors and former Chief Executive Officer of the Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) has trained hundreds of directors and managers of races of all sizes, administered an annual series of race competition, and produced the LaSalle Bank Shamrock Shuffle, the world¹s largest 8k race. A 23-year association management veteran and long-time volunteer, he has utilized his expertise in strategic planning, marketing, fund-raising, membership recruitment, public relations, and lobbying for public interest groups and membership societies. In 1991, he was named a Certified Association Executive (CAE) by the American Society of Association Executives.

Session Leaders: Mark is a member of the Maine Track Club where he has served as a board member-at-large, vice president, and Mark was elected president in 2005. During his tenure as the Maine Track Club president, Mark has been noted for his organizational, communication, fund-raising and recruiting skill. Under his guidance, the Maine Track Club has donated over $300,000 to local charities and schools in Maine. Mark has been the RRCA Maine State Representative since 2006, and he has awarded several RRCA State Championships to area races. He has also been a member of the RRCA Audit Committee for two years. Mark has also been a race director for over eight years and is a member of the Beach to Beacon 10k organizing committee.
Philip Lockwood: Co-Founder, President and Chief Technology Officer, Mercury Sports
Group, Inc. (dba IPICO Sports). His duties at Mercury Sports Group include:
strategic and organizational planning and direction; business planning; and product
development and strategic partnerships.
He has been involved in the selection and implementation of information
technologies for most of his professional career. He’s entering his fifteenth
year as race director for the world renowned Steamboat Classic. In 1985, he
helped create the Peoria Komen Race for the Cure, and has served as Race
Director for the past 18 years. Nationally, he was a founding member of the
Professional Road Racing Organization and Running USA. He serves on several
Central Illinois nonprofit boards including: Bradley University Alumni “B” Club; Illinois Valley
Striders; Peoria Area Sports Commission; and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation – Peoria Memorial Affiliate. Philip received a B.S. in Manufacturing
and Engineering Technology from Bradley University (Peoria, Illinois) in 1985. As a member of the Cross Country and
Track & Field Teams, he set several school records.

inception in 1998 and assumed the position of Executive Director in May 2002.
Iris is a native Cincinnatian and has spent most of her career in broadcast.
She was with WCPO for 17 years filling several roles in sales management and
marketing at the stations. She joined WLWT in 2002 as Director of Marketing and
brings her collective experience and contacts to this event. The Marathon
has grown and prospered under Iris' leadership, more than doubling in size and
reaching the goal of a million dollar marathon for participating charities.The
Marathon's ten year goals having been achieved, Iris remains committed to it's
continued growth and improvement.

Session Leaders: Dan Edwards has been involved with the Tidewater Striders for the past 20 years, has been a board member for the past 18 years, treasurer for 14 years, and race committee co-chair for the past 4 years. He has also led a nationally recognized youth program, coordinated the newsletter and many other critical functions within the 1,800-member club. The race committee, led by Dan, executes a schedule of 10 club races and over 30 club supported races and has procured chip timing equipment to make all these races quality events. Dan serves as race director for four of the club’s races.

David is a California native and forty-seven year resident of South Lake Tahoe, California. He has been running since 1990 and his passion is running the trails of the High Sierra within the Lake Tahoe Basin and the trails of Hawaii. David is the President of both the Tahoe Mountain Milers (Lake Tahoe) and Sagebrush Stompers (Carson City, Nevada) Running Club. David was appointed as the RRCA Nevada State Rep in 1998 and as the RRCA Northern California State Rep in 2002. In 2004 he served as the Convention Director for the RRCA National Convention and was awarded as the 2003 RRCA State Rep of the Year. He is the race director for a variety of running events at Lake Tahoe including the Tahoe Rim Trail 50K/50M/100M Endurance Runs, the Lake Tahoe Kokanee 5K, 10K and Half Marathon Trail Runs and the Lake Tahoe “Fresh Tracks” 5K Snowshoe Race.

The Ultimate Guide to Trail Running
Nancy Hobbs, founder of the American Trail Running Association (www.trailrunner.com), will provide an overview of trail and mountain running to include a definition of the sport, apparel and footwear for running and racing, hydration and nutrition, running and racing techniques, how to find trails in your area, and which trail race to consider for first timers as well as veteran competitors. Hobbs will also discuss the governance of the sport and share pictures from her trail running adventures around the world.

Nancy Hobbs has been running trails and directing running events since the mid-80s and her articles and photographs have been published in magazines including Trail Runner, Ultrarunning, Running Times, and Runner's World. She is the founder and executive director of the American Trail Running Association (www.trailrunner.com), a council member of the World Mountain Running Association, manager of the Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team, chair of the USATF Mountain Ultra Trail Council, and was a member of the RRCA board for eight years. She conducts talks and slide shows about trail and mountain running, and consults on various running projects locally, regionally, and nationally. Kids Run the Nation: Outstanding Youth Running Programs
Learn about best practices in youth running from RRCA Kids Run the Nation grant recipient, the Salisbury Rowan Runners Kids Run the Nation after school program, and the Big Sur Marathon's Just Run program. Learn about resources available for RRCA members to help with implementation or enhancements of youth running programs locally. Learn how these programs are answering the call to improve youth fitness in their communities and nationally and proving that Kids Run the Nation.
Sessions Leaders: David Freeze is president of the Salisbury Rowan Runners in Salisbury, NC. He has completed 24 marathons and totalled over 60,000 running miles. The Salisbury Rowan Runners provide an Adult Beginning Runners program as well as an afterschool running program that provides instruction for over 500 kids. The program received an RRCA Kids Run the Nation Grant in 2007. The club also is involved with about 20 races per year, all providing proceeds for various charities. Wally Kastner and Susan Love will present the Big Sur Marathon's Just Run program.
Susan Love is the administrator of
the Big Sur International Marathon’s youth fitness program JUST RUN, a highly
acclaimed program that won a Gold Medal from Governor Schwarzenegger’s Council
on Physical Fitness and Sports.
She and her colleague, Mike Dove, were honored in 2007 as the Youth
Fitness Contributors of the Year by Running USA. Love, a member of the National Speakers Association, is a
motivational speaker whose engagements have included training clinics and
pre-race seminars at the Big Sur, Twin Cities, Marine Corps, and Portland
marathons. Additionally, she
speaks to numerous groups of children, encouraging them to make fitness and
running a vital part of their lives.
Love is a 38-year veteran of the sport, has completed 34 marathons, and
is a top competitor in her age division.

Runners as Leaders in the Fitness Movement Join this session to learn about opportunities for local running clubs, events, and runners to participate in federal, state and local goverment efforts to get America moving. Learn and discuss ways in which runners can be leaders in the fitness movement.
Session Leader: Bob Herskovitz is the Deputy Regional Health Administrator for the Region V’s Office of Public Health and Science (OPHS). Prior to reporting to OPHS, he served in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as the manager of the Medicare Program Integrity unit, and former special assistant to the Regional Administrator. Over the past several years, Bob has also enjoyed being an adjunct Professor at Governors State University, where he lectures in criminal justice and public policy. Prior to joining the Medicare program Bob served in the U.S. Navy for over 20 years, where he enjoyed a variety of assignments including tours in the Navy’s Pacific Fleet Film Unit, Armed Forces Radio Stations in Antarctica, Italy, Cuba and El Jabal, Saudi Arabia. His final tour was on the Judge Advocate General’s staff at Great Lakes Naval Hospital. Bob has received numerous awards throughout his professional career. Bob has been an avid runner for over 30 years, participating in numerous marathons and few ultra marathons as well. Currently, he is an active member of the Alpine Runners of Lake Zurich, IL and Team Northshore, out of Wilmette, IL. His unique hobby of a weekly commute to work by running the 20 mile distance along Chicago’s famous Northshore has been chronicled by local media. Bob, along with his wife, Janis, reside in Glencoe, Illinois. |

Keeping the Sport Clean Join representatives from the US Anti-Doping Agency and athletes to discuss the importance of doping control in long distance running. Focusing on ethics involved with the use of performance-enhancing substances and the associated health risks, USADA's education program seeks to inform both elite athletes and those participating in sport at a young age of the dangers and consequences of using prohibited substances. In addition, USADA education makes concerted efforts to inform athletes about policies, procedures, and athletes rights and responsibilities with respect to doping control.
Session Leader: Bill Bock is the General Counsel for the United States Anti-Doping
Agency (USADA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado and a partner with the law firm of
Kroger, Gardis & Regas, LLP in Indianapolis, Indiana. USADA is the
independent agency charged with adjudicating doping offenses in Olympic,
Pan-American Games and Paralympic sports in the United States. As USADA’s General Counsel, Bill is
responsible for legal matters pertaining to USADA, including the prosecution of
athletes charged with doping offenses, investigations and assisting staff in
complying with applicable legal standards. Prior to joining USADA as its General Counsel Bill served as
one of USADA’s outside legal counsel and was involved in meetings with the USOC’s
anti-doping externalization task force in 2000 when that task force was
contemplating the transfer of anti-doping matters to an independent entity and
the creation of the organization that would become USADA. Bill resides in Indianapolis, Indiana with his wife
Tracy and five children. Bill currently
splits his time in Indianapolis and in USADA’s Colorado Springs office.
He is a past chairman of the Sports & Entertainment Law Section of the
Indianapolis Bar Association and from 2004-2006 served as Parliamentarian to
the Indiana House of Representatives.

Growing Your Training Programs
Join this session to learn how the Badgerland Striders grew their beginning running program from a simple eight nights of training for beginners into a robust program that includes five different training programs spanning fifty-six nights of training for all skills and abilities. With over ten years of experience with their program, come and learn the secrets of their success. Session Leaders:
Marty Malin is an accountant who started out as a slow sprinter in high school and college, then joined the Badgerland Striders in 1979. He has run 9 ultras, which are more his speed. Besides leading five different beginning running programs for the Badgerland Striders, Marty is also in charge of both a twelve and twenty-four hour and a one mile race. He is also working on a project to install over 240 granite mile markers in local parks, aand he volunteers at over 20 other races throughout the year.
Mike is a Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) certified running coach and is one of the four course instructors for the RRCA Coaching Certification program which trains and certifies adult distance running coaches nationwide. He is certified as a personal trainer by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and National Strength Professionals Association (NSPA). Mike has run 14 marathons and over 30 ultra marathons from 50K to 100 miles. He offers individual coaching for runners from beginners to ultra marathoners and directs two separate group marathon training programs, the Experienced Marathoner’s Program for the Montgomery County Road Runners Club and the Boston Bound Marathon Program. Mike also provides personal fitness training for a wide variety of individuals from athletes to physically challenged adults and is an instructor for group aquatic exercise programs for strength and conditioning.
