 Tours and Excursions

 Sausalito – a charming waterfront community just north of the Golden Gate Bridge.  It is a quick drive from the Fisherman’s Wharf area and can also be reached by ferry boat.  For more information on Sausalito’s attractions, visit www.sausalito.org.  For ferry boat schedules and information, see www.blueandgoldfleet.com or www.goldengate.org.
 
  • Muir Woods National Monument – this much-loved monument celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2008 – for directions to Muir Woods, see http://www.nps.gov/muwo/
  • Point Reyes National Seashore - http://www.nps.gov/pore/ - located in Western Marin County, north of San Francisco, Point Reyes is a popular recreational destination for hikers, kayakers and nature lovers
  • Fitzgerald Marine Reserve – located south of San Francisco, along the San Mateo County coast, this is one of the largest and best preserved tidepools and nature reserves in the world. – www.fitzgeraldreserve.org.  While in the area, continue south on Coast Highway One and visit the quaint town of Half Moon Bay – www.halfmoonbaychamber.org

BEYOND THE BAY AREA

 

Northern California is an area of contrasts, from the Pacific Ocean to towering redwood trees, to the Mediterranean-like Napa Valley.  If you have a little more time to explore during your stay, these three areas in particular are not to be missed

  • Napa and Sonoma Wine Countries.  In addition to hundreds of wineries open to the public for tastings, these two areas offer a wide variety of other activities, including hot air balloon rides, gold, spas, exceptional dining, cycling, and much more.  For information on lodging, dining, wineries, etc. see www.napavalley.com and www.sonoma.com.
  • Yosemite National Park.  This national treasure is around a 4 hour drive from San Francisco.  For information on attractions, lodging, etc. see www.nps.gov/yose
  • Carmel/Monterey/Big Sur.  The magnificent Monterey Peninsula offers spectacular scenery, a wide variety of parks and natural areas, and an endless assortment of recreational and cultural activities.  Carmel and Monterey are a little over a two hour drive from San Francisco.  See www.monterey.com for complete information on lodging, dining, and attractions.
